Pro Tools 9 and Mac OS X Lion in May 2012 or this time earlier...
Hi developers,
this is a reminder that Apple will soon introduce Mac OS X Lion to the market with many very convenient functions, that no one wants to miss. I hope you have learned a lot from the intro of Leopard and Snow Leopard, that you should come along with an compatible update within four weeks and not like before nearly a year. The excuse that you only release updates, that are really functioning is not enough. Like many companies you should have the lion code before release to work on the update to have it on the table when Lion launches. Since now it´s not Digidesign but the smart AVID guys, I hope you improve ;-). In summer 2011 I would like to use Pro Tools 9 with Lion. Thanks in advance if it will be so... |

Just because Apple has come out with a new version of their OS it doesn't mean you have to be on the bleeding edge and jump right on it. Wait until everyone has their ducks in a row. It also doesn't mean that Snow Leopard will stop working - stay with what works and let others suffer.

I stayed on 8.0.1 and 10.5.8 until PT9 came out. No reason to "upgrade" if everything works just fine! As always: If you rely on any software for your professional livelihood, updating is the easiest way to get burned! Make backups, and use what works, not what is new.

So far I haven't seen anything in the "what's new" list of OS X Lion that I can't live without until PT is certified to run under it.
The issue I see relates to people that order new Mac hardware delivered with Lion installed and no option to back grade to Snow Leopard.

If you ask me, It will probably have even more junk that you will have to turn off that will conflict with the operation of protools. Just like widgets. Yawn. Its turning into a circus.

Apple says MobileMe will be supported in its current form until June 2012. So my guess is that Apple will support Snow Leopard until July 2012. So my guess is that Pro Tools will work with Lion July 31st, 2012.

Actually in a lot of cases that doesn't work; http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186
Apple sometimes implements hardware and driver upgrades delivered with specific OS X versions that are not compatible with a previous version. It's their way of dealing with backwards compatibility, officially there isn't any. That's why it's important to keep your original install disks around.
