Default Dolby SR Encoded SVA DAT?

Hi:

A client has asked for music to be composed for three short commercials that are playing in a movie theatre.

She has asked if I can make a Dolby SR Encoded SVA DAT?

How does one do this? Is it something I would need to worry about or the mixer/engineer.

Thanks

Nobody heard of this?

Did a search and found a little info. As far as I can tell, Dolby encoding can only be done by a licensed studio, and cost's big bucks.

Anybody ever done this and can shed more light on it?

Yoy should check out exactly what the producer means by "SR encoded", but it sounds like she is asking for material that is encoded with Dolby SR (Spectral recording) noise reduction. The easiest way to acheive this would be by using a Dolby 363. There are no "big bucks" involved in this process and no requirement for Dolby approval of your studio. A Dolby 363 should be relatively cheap to rent.

If she means SR noise encoded LtRt, it is another story, as this involves Dolby licencing.

What the "SVA" part means, i do not know.

I found this on Film-tech.com: "In the mid-1970's, Dolby (tm) Laboratories developed methods of `matrixing' the SVA (stereo variable area) track in order to encode four tracks worth of information within the twin stereo tracks. This allowed for the additions of a center (dialogue) track and a rear `surround' track to the usual left and right stereo tracks".

Here is the link to the whole article: Click on section 3.3

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys. I am understanding some things a bit better.

Still not sure the person knows exactly what they are asking for.

What are other people doing when they need to provide a mix that will show in a theatre? (like a commercial or trailer)

some labs still ask for DAT. in fact, NT AUDIO in Los Angeles asked for one 2 months ago for a film track i did. have to say i was surpised. do know, that they transfer the DAT to a Pro Tools system that they use to provide audio to the optical camera. but this was not LtRt.

have also just provided the mix that went on the VIDEO MASTER that was transferred. or attached to the QT that went to the lab. again, these were for straight stereo mixes.

otherwise, the traditonal Dolby Printmaster with a DMU and an MOD etc....

Umm....Can you break this down a little more for me.

Let's say I have a 24 bit, 48 khz stereo audio file of music for a commercial to be shown in a theatre. The commercial has no dialogue, so the producer is asking me to be able to deliver it in a format that is ready to go, but I have never done this.

I do have a 16 bit audio DAT machine that I have not used in about 5 years. Would this do the job??

What do I need to do next?

Thanks for the help!!

is this going to be an LtRt SR, or just a plain stereo mix?

if it is a plain stereo mix, then you can pull out your ols DAT recorder, transfer the mix and send it to the LAB. they will put it on the (sva portion) of the film print.

if you are doing LtRt, then the director needs to contact DOLBY and pay a fee for the License and go to a DOLBY approved Dub stage to make the Printmaster.

what is confusing is SR stands for Sperctral Recording -- DOlby's noise Reduction and also Surround, as in the matrixed optical track portion of the mix that plays back LCRS. if it is the former (the SR noise redution) then the LAB does all that.

does that help?

She has asked you for a so called Print Master, which is sometimes described as "Dolby SR Encoded SVA DAT".
You can print this kind of Master tape only in a Dolby approved studio, with either DS-IV or DMU encoder installed.

Looks like all she will need is a stereo master. The lab in Lon(g)don(g) will take care of the rest.

I have learned a thing or two on this one. Thanks again for the input!
