Default Help on imac vs. g5 1st generation

I am in a situation right now. I have an imac in the layaway right now and I went to a pawn shop today and it specializes in selling used studio equipment. I saw a mac g5 there that the guy was going to sell me for $450. Now my question is which one would be the best choice. The imac is brand new and comes with all the specs that the imac brings. It is the 1199 imac. The g5 has a dual processor of 1.8 ghz. 2 gb of ram and 260 hd space. Its only the cpu and I would have to purchase a monitor for it. Now what I want to be able to do is run the latest version of protools, reason, and logic on my computer. Im not going to be doing any heavy recording just mainly producing and some occasional recording. Which one of these should be the best choice for me? Thanks

the g5 dual would work with updated ram. i guess you are very anxious about getting a mac and recording as i would be. that's really a personal call as i see the g5 a good price. at first i thought you were talking about the quad imac but if the g5 is a 64bit computer and intel based i would highly consider that. if it's not intel or 64 you might have some issues with support for it. i'd wait and see what others have to ay on this forum... that would be a sticky issue for me as well. if it's clos to the imac in specs and is 64bit and intel i would get the g5

I did not realize they made Intel PowerPC Macs.

dwayne00, Digidesign announced the end of support for PowerPC based Macs. Pro Tools LE 8.0.1 will be the last version supported on non-Intel Macs.

Instead of the $1,199 iMac, have you considered one of the new Mac Minis? If you already have a monitor, it will perform pretty much in line with the lower-end iMac and will save you a couple of bucks.
