Default PT 12.5 brings lots of Video Engine fixes

The Avid Video Engine report we did a few months back has lead to some of these improvements so THANKS to everyone who took the time to submit a report.

Here are the Video Engine fixes as detailed in the KB article found here
  • Improved some cases with delayed start of playback with AJA Kona card.
  • Video frame movements no longer occur when stopping playback with Insertion Follows Playback enabled.
  • Fixed a case where the video engine takes a long time to load on certain systems.
  • It is now possible to import MXF OP1a created by Adobe Premiere.
  • Fixed cases where imported DV Video started 3 frames earlier than the same video opened in QuickTime Player.
  • Fixed several specific cases where Pro Tools would fail to import Apple ProRes files.
  • Project Type is no longer incorrectly picked for video from AAFs which do not include the first cunk of MXF media.
  • Optimized (sample mapped) video codecs such as DNxHD and AppleProRes will now show the appropriate checkbox on clips with 23.976 media.
  • Fixed a case where video playback failed to stop with audio and then looped indefinitely.
  • Fixed a crash when cancelling an Online Bounce to QuickTime.
  • Playing a single frame selection of H.264 video no longer causes "The Avid Video Engine was unable to stop" error followed by a Pro Tools hang.
  • Audio MXFs created with AMIRA and F55 no longer import out of sync with video.
  • Fixed a crash when the user clicks "OK" or "Cancel" in the QuickTime Settings window of the Bounce to QuickTime dialog.
  • Pro Tools no longer throws errant "Some effects were ignored" messages when opening an AAF with rendered FX.
  • Pro Tools no longer fails with the error "Unable to create thumbnails" after switching active video track in large sessions while the video track is set to Frames view.
  • Importing a sequence from Interplay no longer fails for 720p59 and 1080p59 project types.
Lots of other fixes detailed in the KB article linked to above.

Has the black-wink bug been quietly fixed that was introduced with PT11.2.2?

Thanks,

Frank.

So does this change the type of video we should use or should we just stick with Avid DNxHD 36?

Assuming you can get your Editor to deliver DNxHD or Apple ProRes 422 or DV then it still makes sense to stick with them. They are tried and tested formats for the Protools video engine. Here with only a moderately powerful computer it makes no difference whether I run DNxHD 36 or DNx HD 185. (except one file is 1 fifth of the size of the other to transfer between systems.) Picture wise on a 40 inch HD TV I believe many (myself included) would be hard pressed to notice any significant quality difference.

12.5 infinitely better for me here than 12.4. I suffered from that 1 frame or less bug where PT would lock up - happened 50x a day, and if I was really lucky a complete seizure or two which would mean an app restart. Full day's session yesterday on 12.5 without a hitch.

All seems good here (although I'm a composer not a post guy so just looking for stability more than anything else..!)

12.5 seems great with my AJA IO Express. Very snappy.

I've noticed that the video sync offset needed changing though (quite significantly)

It was previously at 30 quarter frames for PT12.3, and I'm now measuring it at 4 quarter frames. That's obviously a pretty massive change. This is measured with Catch In Sync rather than a syncheck, so take that for what it's worth, but even so just a heads up that with an AJA card I've seen a big change in offset.

To be fair, I've also moved to El Capitan, so that might be a factor...

Great info! I finished a project last night so I'll be going to 12.5 today and see what it can do for my next.

Thanks,

Frank.
I'm afraid our black wink friend is still with us. Visible in native display as well as external hardware (AJA etc) Requires transport pre-roll enabled *AND* a video sync offset of at least 2 quarter frames.
