Default 5.1 Genelec Monitors

Hi everyone,

I have a small room and a 5.1 setup by Genelec. My front speakers are 8030 and my surround speakers are 8020.
Now I have the oportunity to change my surround speakers for the same size of the front ones. Do you think is a good ideia or is better to have the surround smallers than the front? Even if I am in a small room?

Thanks in advance,
zzstation

We all crave new stuff for our rooms. These days the first thing I ask is :
does the new product (Speakers) increase our workflow or our bottom line?
Will it create any new clients?

Is there anything wrong with the way your mixes translate to TV or
Theater? Have you gotten any complaints about your mixes?

If not, take your money and apply it in other area such as a new control surface, plug ins or projector and screen.

Hey Zz. I've got the same exact setup as you. We are about to replace the rear 8020s with 8030's.

Not that our mixes weren't translating, it's just personal preference. I don't like the sound to change color when it hits the rear.

No it won't increase the bottom line, but if it inspires you why the heck not. I'll let you know how we make out.

Hey Marty, thanks for your answer! It does make a lot of sense!
But I'm kind of insecure because my speakers are too smalls, and might not translate well in big rooms.

Hey Iaki, good to hear from you! Let me know if it's a good choice!

Thanks guys,
ZZstation

I was in a slightly different situation but I would agree with Marti's sentiments...
My room is pretty small and budget wasn't huge so we ended up going with 8020's all the way round - we tried the 8030's on the front but I honestly couldn't hear a worthwhile difference so we went back to 8020's - the extra cash mean't I could go DCommand over C24 which does make a big day-to-day difference. The thing I like about the Genelecs in general is the whole series has very similar characteristics (certainly the small to mid size models anyway) so in my opinion you don't compromise going smaller.
Stick with the 20's and invest elsewhere

We've got three Avid edit rooms (12x10x12) setup with 8020s 5.1 along with the sub. They sound great and translate very well to the larger 8240 rooms. Everything has been calibrated to K-Cal work levels for the size of the space, which makes a huge difference, IMHO, as to how well the mixes sound in every other room.

If you were inclined to replace LF and RF as 8030s, I'd also change the center while you're at it. You certainly don't want spectral changes panning across the front of your room.
