Default Re: Windows 98 PT Performance vs. Windows ME

honestly at first I hated winme. I'm not sure why. Oh yeah...it sucked. (jk) I was unsing win98 and read a thread about people adding more ram to win98 and it actually slowed down. Then I read that changing to winme helped a bit because it has better memory management.

So.............

I'm using winme and it's fine..I think there was a slight difference but not THAT much. What I like about it is that the os/registry seems to stay quick and clean much longer than in win98. Win98 is great for a few months until all of your programs are installed. Then it's slow as hell.

Having used both Win98 and WinME with PTLE I can say that I've found absolutely no difference in performance or stability between the two OSes with PTLE. I have done a few informal tests to confirm this for myself.

Mike,
I've used them both. As far as Pro Tools is concerned I can't tell the difference. I do think the 1394 integration is better in ME, which I'm now starting to use on a regular basis for my audio drive.

I think that maybe ME is a bit cleaner on updates than 98SE, but that's just a guess.

Default Windows 98 PT Performance vs. Windows ME

Here's my plan. I intend to replace my hard drive to set it up with a bigger drive to dual boot XP for my non audio applications, then whatever operating system folks seem to be happiest with on the other half. I'm running a p4 Intel DB850.

I'm waiting until the new year to do this... so if PT is ready for XP, I'll do that, but if not- I need to do this anyway. Another reformat for XP shouldn't be a big deal on the partition for just audio.

For those of you that have tried PT on both- what do you think works better?

I've used both and I just like me for whatever reason...it's been rock solid for me.
