why are automation breakpoints forming when using pencil tool?

I know this is a simple issue, but have not been able to locate solution online so am trying here:

When using the pencil tool to draw a straight line of automation between two points, it is adding breakpoints. Why is this and how do I prevent this from happening? Where does one change 'breakpoint resolution' so that no breakpoints are added? If I create two breakpoints with the Grabber tool on each end of region, it won't allow me to drag second breakpoint up to create an increasing straight line from left to right.

Pencil tool (Line) creates a breakpoint where you start and where you end.

You can easily create a linear ramp between two breakpoints. Shift+click'n'drag a breakpoint to constrain movement to vertically.
