iLok2 or 3 required

If some plugin says that iLok2 or 3 required, do I need to buy a appropriate USB stick? This plugin is MDWEQ6 for me.

It doesn't say that it supports iLok Cloud, so looking at the requirements, you will need a 2nd or 3rd gen iLok:
"Copy Protection – Requires iLok USB 2 Key (for authorization; not included) or higher"

But can you tell if this stick must be sitting on the computer all the time or is it necessary only during activation?

As far as I know, all of my iLok dongles have needed to be plugged in all the time. If you have an issue with the USB-C not having enough of them available and have say a USB-2 connection, Amazon.com sells adapters that will work if it's necessary. I recently had a Gen 3 regular USB-2 iLok start to fail on me, which has never happened before in 20 years of using them. Fortunately I had purchased at the same time a new USB-C Gen 3 version of iLok that I planned to use when I got a newer Mac Pro. I just transferred all of my licenses over the weekend and it's working great! So, I bring this up to remind you as a failsafe to purchase the Zero Downtime for $30.00 per year as it covers theft and loss of your licenses from Pace.com

I believe that this plugin is worth it.

The importance of this CANNOT be overstated. Pay the $30/year for Zero Down Time (ZDT) insurance with Theft & Loss Protection (TLC).

If you break your iLok or it is lost or stolen, you will get temporary replacement licenses immediately, and will get permanent replacement licenses within a few weeks (you need to return the broken iLok if you have it, or use TLC, which needs to be refreshed every 3 months by plugging in the iLok and syncing).

If you don't have ZDT/TLC and you break or lose your iLok, you will need to contact every single plugin and software developer and ask for a replacement license, which they are not obligated to give to you.

+1. We've been saved from horrendous nightmares a couple of times by having ZDT. It's mandatory, imo.
