Re: new PC, Workstation, pc gaming, second hand opportunities and specs

That’s a point that i have never thought indeed. But i don’t realy understand… I try to get informed, and : - if it’s onlty about the consumption of energy that’s not realy important. - but it’s about how the pc works and interact with his cooler/ventilator to keep the processor at his best performance, because otherwise it became hot and have bad performance, that’s interesting indeed. But i don’t understand this number of Typical TDP. And your links seems to mix a lot of data from each each exemple, and not specificly for the Typical TDP. So it’s better to have a low or a high Typical TDP ? |

Yes i agree with you. and especialy also on the fact that new version of pro tools will be even more greedy in power/CPU. Yes all works great except the message time to time of error with too many plugins.

Re: new PC, Workstation, pc gaming, second hand opportunities and specs
High TDP is a bad thing. Basically it is how much heat is the CPU going to generate. Higher the heat, the more your cooling is going to do which will likey result in noise.
The Passmark score is a rating of the processing power - higher the better. This is just a quick way to get a comparison between processors. Basically what my post was saying is buying a middle of the road AMD Ryzen (or new Intel i5 - https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php...2600KF&id=4625) will provide as good processing power, with less heat and power usage. Again, it isn't all about core count and clockspeed. Joel

Re: new PC, Workstation, pc gaming, second hand opportunities and specs
^ yes, and even if the extra heat is cooled away, the CPU internals still run hot (which degrades its longevity).
Apple ARM processors (the Mx Apple Silicon series) have TDP between 10 to 60 Watts. Compared to x86 processors, the most high end Apple CPU could be put into a laptop. And that TDP includes GPU and RAM. As far as noise is concerned, I am just loving my M2 Air. It is completely passive cooled, no fans anywhere. Dead silent.

Re: new PC, Workstation, pc gaming, second hand opportunities and specs
Ok, Thank you all.
So a SUMMARY of this topic (and in addition to others topics) whould be : Having more cores to use more plugin. Which is my goal (in my case it would be great to have 8, or at least minimum 6) Having enough clock speed (minimum 3,5 Ghz i suppose) For the Ram, i don’t know exactly but i suppose it would be better to have more. So minimum 16 RAM. Windows 8 is sure for pro tools 11 so it’s better. Windows 10 is not sure for pro tools 11, so it’s better not, but some people succed on others topics. And it’s better to keep in mind that a low TDP (Watt) will be better to not have a CPU too hot, and so increase the performance whithout having fans that makes noise. And it’s better to have a balance between all the componant of the PC, so the PC in the first post will be not good because of the low clock speed at 2,2 Ghz. Thank you !

Re: new PC, Workstation, pc gaming, second hand opportunities and specs
That's not entirely accurate.. There's a lot of performance improvements with newer CPU architecture - that was the point I was trying to make.
An 8 core 3GHz processor from 5 years ago will not have as much performance as a current generation 8 core 3GHz processor. As an example: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare...Intel-i7-7800X 7th gen i7-7800x 6 cores 3.5GHz Passmark score - 12827 12th gen i5-12500 6 cores 3.0GHz Passmark score - 19988 The newer 12th gen has the same number of cores, lower clockspeed but outperforms the older 7th gen.

In the same time, there is some clue indicate that the 12th gen i5-12500 is more powerfull that at the first seen : turbo clock until 4,6 Ghz ! and the TDP at only 65 W. But yeah i see your point. Anyway both of them will be better than my actual computer. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare...-Intel-i7-4770 That’s a great site to compare. Thank you !
