Re: affordable Analog Mixer for Pro Tools 11
Hi Walker,
I have been working with PT and analog boards for over 20 years, am now exclusively In The Box. Honestly if you want to see any sonic benefit (dubious in my opinion) in going out of the box you need to buy top shelf converters, a top shelf analog console like a neve, ssl, api, and have top shelf analog outboard, as well as some sort of patch bay system to make it workable. Even after you have that you may well find as I did that it is a total pain in the arse when you want to try to recall a mix exactly as it was just so you can make one or 2 small changes for a client. Honestly my advice would be to invest in a better system that will help you work in the box such as great monitoring, a good control surface, good plugins and some acoustic treatment. You will probably get much more out of it. In the box sounds great these days, plugins are perfectly capable of making a mix sound "analog", but give you infinitely more control, flexibility and recallability. Having owned large format consoles I personally would not go down that path again. I compared my board mixes to ITB mixes and I usually preferred the ITB mixes the last few times I did it. Of course this is just my personal experience, you and others may have a totally different perspective. Ok donning my flame-proof suit now! :)

Re: affordable Analog Mixer for Pro Tools 11
Indeed^^ I will second the same sentiment on consoles(and NOT using one). I love a nice console, but nothing "affordable" is up to giving actual "sonic improvement"(seen any $2500 Neve's lately). Now maybe what you really want is "analog summing", which CAN give(arguably) a sonic improvement, while being simple(just leave all the knobs at unity), but as said, if you don't have great converters in both directions, you may negate any possible improvement.
Its a similar story with hardware inserts. If the hardware is "premium", then maybe its worth the hassle. But if you want to patch in that old Alesis 630 compressor and the old Lexicon Alex reverb....plugins will beat that every time This old dog will stay ITB

If you are so inclined - pick up the new Tom Petty record "Hypnotic Eye" that was his first #1 record on the rock charts. It's a great sounding record and was done entirely digital: recorded on a Venue (and then overdubs and mixes all in the box on Pro Tools HD). No analogue summing.
You can even get it as a Blu Ray for full 24 Bit mixes and Surround Mixes. Which sounds amazing... I'll be publishing a blog post in the next day or so of my interview with mixer/producer. If anyone left in music/rock could afford to use an expensive analog desk - it would be these guys, but they choose all the benefits of tracking, overdubbing, editing, mixing and mastering with Pro Tools.
