Default Simple Question

When I had 7.1 I was able to do some editing during playback without interrupting playback. For example, during playback I was able to create fades, cut regions, move regions etc... without changing playback at all. When I upgraded to 7.4, I was still able to do this but it would pause playback for a second while processing. I dealt with it... Now with 8, wherever I click in the edit window during playback, the play head automatically jumps there and continues playing but from wherever I click. I just want to be able to make some edits while playing back without effecting playback at all. Does that make sense? I'm sure it's a simple preference issue, I just can't find it. Thanks.
