Default Upgrade to Pro Tools 12?

Hi, everyone

I have pro tools 10 & 11 and want to upgrade to the newest pro tools 12. The problem is that I previously had problems with pro tools 11 such as, delay while pressing spacebar to stop the click continued for a few sec after. I also had problems with freezing and shutting down Pro Tools 11. None of the mentioned with PT 10. So I'm stuck with version 10

I'm running a Mac Pro primo 2009,
-2 x 2,26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
-6 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
-NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
-OS X 10.9.5

My question is, will it run on my Mac Pro, just like PT 10, without any issues?

Kind regards
chaudes

I'm not the final MAC authority, but I do know that 8gb ram is the bare minimum, 16gb is highly recimmended, so a ram upgrade is in order.

chaudes,

I would ask yourself why would you need PT12? Is there anything that would improve your workflow? Offline bounce is nice but that's the only useful thing they have added since PT11.
Everything else is a complete nightmare . You think with pro Tools running 64 bit it should scream but you'll find your copy of PT10 will be way faster on the machine (or any machine). And if you need video, well forget about anything past PT10. I have MAC5.1 12 CORE 2.66 32 gigs of RAM and still runs slower then my PT 10 running on a old 2006 2.66 four core,

I would suggest wait till Avid has figured out how to fix their software so you're not paying to be a beta tester for them. I actually recall reading an article two years back that Avid laid off a most of the Pro Tools beta testers.

cheers!

I do sessions all day, every day PT12.4 with 4 gig of RAM. Not a problem, although it's just audio tracks, few virtual tracks (if any).

It should. But why not installing Sierra on separate partition to see for yourself? If the operating system feels as snappy as before, you should be fine.

And as said, 6GB is a little low. Memory is cheap now, why not upgrade? macsales.com has 16GB kit for 85 dollars.

The first thing I would do is upgrade your computer to a 12 core. I can help you with understanding the process. Once you've done that, it will be as fast as the current trash can MacPro that sells for over 6k, but will cost you around $350 to upgrade it. I did it to my machine!

PM me if you are interested!

Hi, thanx for your reply. I've been considering the upgrade for a year now. I want to upgrade for one reason only and it's cause I need more audio tracks. Since 10 and 11 only runs around the 90 tracks and 12 was upgraded to 128 audio tracks in total. My sessions are reasonably big because I do a lot of layering, specially on vocals. Sometimes even around 50 vocal tracks that I need to record in a separate pro tools session. Which is pretty annoying. :)

Wouldn't it be cool if you committed to your vocal layers at some point? so those 50 tracks become one stere track...

Yes of course but what about when I send the session for a mix? The mixing engineers i work with want nearly everything separately.

You could still have those 50 voc tracks on a separate session, of which you have committed to 2-track
