Midi setup questions

Ive looked for threads and stuffs but I wasnt able to find what I was looking for...

anyways my old setup: PT 10 nonHD, mbox mini, m-audio axiom 25 (1st gen), 88 key Korg SP-250.

the mbox did not have midi in/out ports so I plugged the axiom in via usb and ran a single 5 pin midi cable from the midi IN on the axiom to the midi OUT on the korg.
this allowed my to have the 25 key for small keyboard inputs like synth leads and whatnot and the 88 key for more elaborate piano parts.
I think this was basically using midi thru? Bc pro tools only ever saw the axiom 25 but I could utilize all 88 keys and octaves on the korg almost like an extension and had no issues

New setup is all the same except now I have a focusrite scarlet 18i20 which does have midi in/out

I am still using usb on the axiom and am running the same single 5 pin midi cable from the Korg into the new interface.
I have tried both korg midi out to interface midi in and korg midi in to interface midi out and I get no signal.
I have tried going in to Pro Tools under "midi studio setup" and adding the korg there. On a side note under "manufacturer" (drop down box in midi studio setup) the SP-250 is not listed (this may be because the sp-250 has no preset or programmable parameters on the keyboard?).
Then I set the midi input and output ports to the focusrite and still nothing.
I can attach pictures of the devices and screenshots if needed.

So as I was taking pictures to send to a friend as to why it wasnt working... it just starts working... smh
