Re: Field Recorder Workflow issues in PT 11.2.1

It would be great if PT could expand offline items, but I think PT just doesn't know what metadata and audio is on its timeline until it can link to some sort of audio file. MC is way better in the data handling department. Thanks for your suggestions, but Avid should make sure we don't have to do all that double indexing and stuff to make it work. The dumb tasks are for the computer, not the user ;-) Edit: in fact 2 times saving and indexing just didn't work on a session. What did work, was closing it, re-open, again "save and index" and then PT found the files to expand with... Edit2: that is until it spinballed on a waveform rebuild , probably should let PT finish that first, although PT should be able to multitask. Restart, Re-expand, success. Another remark would be, that a window telling you that PT is calculating the expand would be useful. Now it just sits there, and the only way to know PT is calculating, is the fact that nothing else works... FRW could be improved in numerous ways. Greetings, Thierry

Titan is such an enormous effort compared to expand track. There's no way back to that for me. I think it works very good. The most important thing they need to implement for the FRW is this: http://protools.ideascale.com/a/dtd/...ow/110825-3779 For me that's the main flaw in it that creates unnecessary work very similar to the huge cleanup we needed to do after a Titan conform. No need for that nowadays. Frank.

I've posted some work arounds in another thread, but it's still a mess, I'm dealing with while I write this. It would be great if PT could FRW expand, with just an AAF (without the media). If you already have the sound rushes, all you would need is a small AAF, load it up in PT and with everything offline, FRW expand using the metadata in the AAF... One can dream sometimes no ;-) Greetings, Thierry

I totally agree Thierry. I can't see that would be very hard to implement.

Re: Field Recorder Workflow issues in PT 11.2.1
Each to their own I guess. We're all aware of the flaws of both, but the Titan result is my preferred. And It just chugs away in the background for the most part so you can be getting on with other stuff.
I also prefer the demultiplexing that Titan does with the _01 at then end of each file. And it is often worth demultiplexing, or you're carrying 8 times the media you need to once you've stripped away the channels you don't need

For reasons unknown to me, when Media Composer ingests the audio rushes it places the Sound Roll name into the Tape Name field. We can exploit this "feature" to our advantage. Before I expand a track from an AAF, I set my match criteria to match ALL of the following: Shoot Date, Scene and Take, and Tape Name to Sound Roll Name. Of course, you may want to use slightly different criteria depending on the situation, but the important one is Tape Name to Sound Roll Name. This will only expand to media with a Sound Roll name that matches your reference file's Tape Name, i.e. only original field recorder files and no Avid media. Once I have expanded and I am just editing away, I go to the match criteria window and untick Tape Name to Sound Roll Name and instead tick Sound Roll Name. Now, when I look for matches on any clip from a field recorder recording, I will see only other channels (or AudioSuite rendered clips) from that polywav (no Avid media). This has worked for me for the last several years. Hopefully, it will work for you!

Re: Field Recorder Workflow issues in PT 11.2.1
Broken again in PT12 ...
The "save and index" doesn't work. first movie with PT12 I have to save and index each time I want to expand tracks. Opened the same session in PT 11.3.1 and it works ok ..... |
