Default Is it possible to have too many plugins?

Recently, I've been experiencing ProTools crashes to the point where I'm really having troubles booting up ProTools.

This was happening both with 2018.7 and now with 2018.10. I'm on Sierra, PTHD, Mac, tons of RAM, lots of room on my boot SSD. Normally, this rig runs flawlessly.

I've run the Pref Dumper, I've reinstalled PTHD fresh; I've installed the Driver fresh.

When trying to boot up, PT crashes as it gets near to the end of going through the plug-ins. I do notice that in my plug-ins folder, the latest thing I installed (Izotope RX7), those plugs are "greyed out". Could it be that I simply have too many plug-ins in my system? I do have a lot. Not a single krack. All legit.

Anyone run into this before?

Thanks for any info you might have...

Uninstall that one and see if it works?

Hi,

Its not the quantity. Check the dates and see if there are any really old one's in the folder.

Or remove half the plugs and see how it runs. now put those removed plugs back in and remove the one's that you left in the folder and see how the second set of plugs run.

Process of elimination really! if it is a plugin issue.

Also good to remove everything from the mac. USB stuff, external drives and anything except keyboard and mouse.

Yeah, that's a good idea, too. We do periodically check to see if we're working on the latest versions of our plugs, but I should double check that. Thanks for a timely reminder.

Before the search box was introduced I used to uninstall plugins I didn't use anymore because the list can get pretty large and difficult to search, now I do it to reduce the loading time of Pro Tools.

An update:

I feel like I may know what's causing this problem. Crizdee reminded me of something. I'm running a Mac Pro "cheesegrater" tower. I have a third party card installed which has two USB-C ports so that we can connect with newer peripherals (ie, hard drives). In one of those USB-C ports, I keep a 6" adapter which is USB-C to USB-2/3 so that we can connect hard drives there and transfer files at USB 3 speed.

When these crashes have occurred, I've always had an external drive connected through that system, and when I remove that external hard drive, all seems good again. So at the moment, I'm looking in that direction as the source of these problems. I'll keep you all updated.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Thanks for keeping us in the loop, so if anyone else with something similar can find answers too.

By the way, what was your internet speed when you joined back in 1969?
Just curious

Haha, yeah, W.T.F.? Um, given that the www didn't really get going until like 1996 or so, how the f*ck could the DUC be listing me as joining in 1969?

WTF?
