Default Mac Pro 2006

Hi
Can I install the HD pcie card on this model/year computer, and install PTHD 8.1, with Snow Leopard.
Mac Pro Desktop A1186 2.66GHz 10GB RAM 500GB HD Dual Core Intel Xeon
I want to switch from my Dell Precision Workstation to this Mac. I wish I could afford to buy a new mac, but if this used Mac will do the job better than my PC
I will buy it.

Thanks, Tony

No, the Mac Pro 1,1 doesn't have PCIe slots

EDIT: Sorry -- This is incorrect, the PowerMac 1,1 does have PCIe slots... need to get me some sleep...

I don't think that's correct. The last generation powermac g5's had pcie. I had one, and am 99% sure all the intel Mac pros do also.

Thanks for all your help!

So do you think this Mac will run PTHD 8.1 well, with its current set-up?

Sorry.. got confused there for a second... Yes the 1,1 does have PCIe slots... be aware though that RAM for this Mac is much more expensive than current Mac Pros.

Well I decided to buy the Mac Pro early 2008 model, there is a used one in my area. It has the (2)2.8ghz processors, but only 2 gigs of ram . I know Avid recommends 4gig, but what is your thoughts on ram value, I have been a pc user for a while, and the older pc's could only use 3gig anything over that was not utilized in a 32 bit system.
Does anyone know where to buy ram for this year Mac ?

Owc and crucial are good places to check. And on a Mac more ram is better. Pro tools itself can address 4gb of ram, not counting what osx and other programs can address. Some VI's can also address memory outside of the 4gb pro tools can use. So I'd get at least 5-6gb and if you use a lot of VI's maybe even more. Also pro tools 10 can run the session out of ram. So in that case even more can be better.
