More headroom on Mbox or software? which distorts?

If I were to get a sp/dif outputting quality mic preamp like the Lavry Blue, would I get more headroom?

Now when I reach distortion with the regular setup with a hot signal is the Mbox focusrite preamp getting spitty or is it in the software?

The software will not distort unless it is red lining so if you hear distortion before it redlines then it is your preamp
