Default Cannot get MIDI controller to work

In our studio we're running PRO TOOLS HD 6.9.2 on a G5 Dual Processor running Tiger 10.4.5.

On my LE system at home powered by MBox I can connect my Kurzweil SP88 as a MIDI controller via an M-Audio USB Uno 1x1 MIDI adapter plugged into my computer. I set up an AUX track and choose an instrument plug-in (Reason Adapted or Symphonique Silver Edition) and it works just fine.

However, in our studio HD system, I connect to the G5 and doing all other things the same, I get nothing. My M-Audio does give me a light showing it is connected to the computer and is receiving power; when I hit a key on the SP88 the M-Audio interface shows that it is receiving the signal; in the MIDI section of Pro Tools it recognizes that the M-Audio interface is connected and active, yet when I hit a key it will not trigger anything in Reason or Symphonique.

Is there something different with the HD/TDM system than the LE as far as connecting MIDI? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Since 6.9 I've had some midi issues that may be related. I use a Motu usb interface. If I exit PT and do anything else... itunes, firefox, etc. and then relaunch PT, it won't recognize the midi input. The lights on the interface show midi info, but no input on a selected or record enabled PT midi track. Reboot and the world is fine again.

Another odd thing... if a session has all 64 midi output channels in use when opened... same thing happens... no midi input. Selecting an output not in use somehow "turns on" the midi input. I had to redo my orchestra templates to have 63 enabled outputs--- so I can choose the unused output to "flick the switch".

Haven't had time to track down the issue further--- just know the work arounds. I'm pretty sure this is usb midi related.

Try a reboot--- and good luck.

I did set-up the MIDI preferences in the MAC. Also, I can get the MIDI signal to go into Garage Band, so the issue only appears when I want to use it in Pro Tools HD.

I have rebooted and restarted, re-installed drivers to no avail...

Thanks anyway.

Is it at all possible you may have forgotten to enable your controller within PT ?

PT6 Reference Manual, pg. 182
PT7 Reference Manual, pg. 188

To enable input devices:

1 Choose Setup > MIDI > Input Devices.

2 In the MIDI Input Enable dialog, select the
MIDI devices you will record from. Also, make
sure any devices that will be used as a control
surface are also selected.

IHTH.

I've had a similar problem with my Oxygen-8. I've found that hot plugging the USB connector once protools is launched helps.

Go to MacHD>Users>your account>Library>Preferences>By Host and trash 'com.apple.midi.a bunch of numbers and letters.plist'.

Go to MacHD>Users>your account>Library>Preferences and trash 'com.apple.audio.audiomidisetup.plist'.

Empty the trash and restart, then see if everything is working.
