Default Single processor upgrade or Dual?- Gigadesigns

Guys,
I have a G4 with a Sonnet 1GHZ processor upgrade running OS 9.2.2 and PT LE 5.2.1.

I want to upgrade the processor again. I'm looking at Gigadesigns 1.4 GHZ single processor upgrade but my Mac is capable of running a Dual Processor upgrade. Gigadesigns offers a 1.3 GHZ upgrade as well.

My question is
1) should I upgrade to the single 1.4 or

2) should I upgrade to the Dual 1.3

Will the dual give me better performance or is the single my best bet. I'm not a computer guru so I'm not sure if 9.2.2. or LE 5.2.1 will take advantage of dual processing.

Thanks to all who take out time to respond.

No benefit to a dual processor with OS9/ PT5-- only in OSX/PT6. If you're planning on getting into X, at some point you should consider it.

A dual will yield somewhere around a 20% performance increase over a single processor. Mainly it frees up one processor to handle system level stuff and the other is dedicated to processing for apps that take advantageof it like PT6.

My single @ 1.4GHz seems to perform as well, if not better than a dual 1GHz for most things.

..and if you go for Panther, the display texture is done on your graphic card, freeing the cpu(s). It's called Quartz Extreme.

Go dual and max out your RAM. OS X will love you for it and perform much much better. I just installed the dual 1.3 Giga card in a dual 533 digital audio machine and it works wonderfully, so far.

However, I did have some problems after installation that I had to call Giga tech support to straighten out. Whenever I'd rip a CD in iTunes, my machine would lock up. Tech had me adjust some jumpers on the card to change the voltage (apparently, they starve the cards at the factory in an attempt to keep heat down), and I've had great performance since. It runs smoothly, and the fan is actually quieter than the one it's replacing.

Whatever you do, be wary of the the PowerLogix cards. I had a wretched experience with their dual 1.4 card (pain in the ass installation, terribly loud fan, kernel panics, locked me out of my user directory, f'd up my hard drive, etc.) and exchanged it for the Giga plus a LaCie FireWire DVD burner and a nice USB hub. Much more for my money...

Giga == recommended.

Dual processors == recommended

Dave I would go for the dual card. Actually I will be getting this GigaDesigns Dual 1.3 upgrade card over the weekend.

Muxlow, it seems we have the same set up(DP 533, 1.5 GB, 6.1.2, 10.2.8) and soon I'll have the same upgrade card. Question(!):

Are you satisfied with your current track count/plug-in count?! Have a before and after example to share?!

Anyway good luck Dave, Muxlow with your new "system" ! This upgrade card option is really convenient for me right now - price/specs wise. This way I hold on to my good ol' 001/G4, and don't break the bank by going 002/G5.

Will the Gigidesigns 1.467 single upgrade report the proper system speed to OS 10.28 system profiler on a Quicksilver 2001? The UAD-1 card depends on this to determine latency for Plug in Delay Compensation. I had to return a sonnet 1.4 upgrade last week for this reason. Almost ordered the powerlogics but it seems the giga would be better, it certainly is cheaper. One thing's for sure, I'm not looking for new trouble. System works fine, just needs a little horsepower.

Quicksilver G4 OS 10.28
Control 24
PT LE 6.1.2
Universal Audio UAD-1 v3.51
VST -RTAS Adapter 1.05
DIGI 002R
Nuendo 2.1

Sadly, I haven't had a good time to work out ProTools with the new card, but when I opened up some tracks that used to choke my machine, they worked flawlessly. Seems that the CPU usage is quite a bit lower as well.

I was surprised that I didn't feel this huge rush of speed after I installed it, but when I run heavier apps (photoshop, pro tools, etc.), it certainly helps quite a bit. Probably one of those things where you don't really notice the jump up, but going back down makes it excruciatingly obvious...

Thanks for the reply muxlow. I will now be more "grounded" upon installation.. I won't expect any miracles, but I will surely welcome the "choke" elimination factor! Thanks again.

my single 1.4 GHZ Gigadesigns upgrade arrived today and I'm am very pleased with the boost in power. Extremely simple and fast installation. Opened a plug-in intensive session and CPU meter was only halfway up. A good move for me as I stay in OS 9.2.2 and PT 5.2.1 (FOR NOW)
