Default 003 spdif mirroring

could someone tell me what's going on with spdif mirroring and the 003r?

i just got mine, and the guide proclaims (in the digital i/o section of ch 8):
"the s/pdif output channels always mirror the main outs 1-2."
this statement would seem to be not true in any way,
though i really want it to be.
obviously you can assign multiple outputs in a session (and HAVE to, to get mirroring in the case of
this box, apparently).
the option to turn on spdif mirroring in digi core audio manager is not available. next to it's sad greyed-outness
it says 002r only. and i'm not sure how to take that. the guide would suggest it's not available because it's already going on,
but as noted this is not its default state.

as discussed, this is of no consequence in protools sessions, but it sucks (it actually more than sucks, it makes me insane) that i cant get the output of my computer on spdif (itunes, standalone intsruments, whatever).
i hate to jump to conclusions, but why do i have a feeling this is another one those bizarre design oversights (like the ones that just made me send back an mbox pro: no firewire 800 support, no clocking above 48k on digital input)? why why why??????
please somebody tell me you can turn on spdif mirroring!!!!!!!!

bump...important! This ought to work...

And btw, did you actually get a 003 from the retail channel already? Still waiting on mine...

Default Re: 003 spdif mirroring

Found this from Digi:

S/PDIF outputs 17 and 18 are "unavailable"
S/PDIF Mirroring is enabled.
When enabled:
S/PDIF digital output is "mirrored" and output on 1 & 2 in the output dialogue box.

When disabled:
S/PDIF outputs separately to outputs 17 & 18 (ADAT mode in the Optical Format Box) or 9 & 10 (S/PDIF mode in the Optical format Box) in the output dialog box.

*Remember to always reset I/O Labels after any changes are made to these settings.

To set up a digital send to an external device from
a Digi 002 or Digi 002 Rack system:
1 Choose Setup > Playback Engine and choose
the peripheral.
2 Do one of the following:
• If the external device is connected to the
S/PDIF RCA jacks, deselect S/PDIF Mirror-
ing. (When S/PDIF Mirroring is on, digital
output at the S/PDIF RCA jacks exactly mir-
rors the output of analog Channels 1–2.)
• If the external device is connected to the
Optical ports, choose a format (most likely
S/PDIF for an effects device) from the Opti-
cal Format pop-up menu.
3 Choose Internal from the Clock Source pop-
up menu.
4 Click OK.
5 Optionally, configure the I/O Setup dialog
with new path names for effects routing.
