Default Memory and external drive suggestions to get my MacBook humming with PT v.8

I don't have enough memory, and the absence of a dedicated, fast, external drive are causing PT v.8 to lock up constantly. I know I am going to need to add memory and get a fast drive---if anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.
Here are the basics of my current MacBookHardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB31.008D.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.24f2
Serial Number (system): W87471RFZ64
Hardware UUID: 7A89200F-7356-5C70-BD1A-2F5A5FFE8E58

For firewire drives, Glyph and OWC are 2 excellent choices. Many will suggest Lacie, but I would not. Find out the specs of the RAM that fits your machine(check with Apple) and buy it from newegg.com for half pf what Apple charges. 4gig is the "happy spot" for RAM(according to 2 separate Pro Tools instructors). What version of OSX are you running?
