I check out http://www.dontcrack.com periodically because, in addition to some usable freeware plugs (in all formats), they also from time to time have some deals on other higher echelon ones. Also you can try out most of the non-free ones.

I find the stock EQ III to be very useful as a surgical or general EQ, and Pultec(which I can't live without) can be had cheap from ejwells, air user blog or ebay. TL Space is a great reverb....IF you have the IR's that it needs to be great(I was given a batch). The IK Classik verbs are solid performers, as is Breverb(I have way more verbs than I need and I gravitate to those that are simple to use and fast). SMACK! can also be found cheap at the same places and its a nice "character" compressor(although I am starting to like the softube Tube Tech more and more.
