I just read the article Mykhal sent. Very interesting. This appears to be THE CPU for a cost effective upgrade. I'm still thinking about the 3930 though.

Probably not a good choice(Onboard graphics). Why not get the newer version and re-use everything else(x58A UD3R).

Some chipset manufactures host GPU on the northbridge with Z68 however Intel LGA 1155 Socket which is compatible with Z68 chipset supports on-die GPU. Non-dedicated graphics cards over the past have shown to be not successful and probably never will be given the nature of Pro Tools. Anyways I'm with Albee, recycle your current components with a new X58 motherboard.

Why would it not work? I ask this question because I am about to make a new audio workstation and have some thinking to do maybe people in this thread can help me...

I am about to buy these components....

1 corsair 850w pro series gold power supply
1 Intel core i7 2700k
1 Asus p8z68-v/gen3 Z68 ...OR... 1 Asrock p67 Extreme Gen3
1 Microsoft OEM win7 pro 64bit sp1
1 Antec Kuhler h20 9320
3 seagate 1tb 3.5" sata 7200rpm hdd
2 Kingston KHX1600c9d3k2/8gx ddr3 ( basically 4 4gig ram memory sticks at ddr 3 1600mhz)
1 PNY Geforce GTX550 TI 1GB GD5 pci-e

Then I would do some overclocking and disable the motherboards onboard graphics and make it use the pny geforce gtx550 ti....

Anyone know if this setup will work? Has anyone had Success using the 2 motherboards I listed? I will continue searching this thread but its a pretty big one and if anyone can help guide me on if this build I am building would not work/ have conflictions please let me know.

I have been researching these 2 motherboards for about a week and a half now and I cant figure out if they are compatible with pro tools and mbox 3rd generation drivers.

Many Z68 boards have known issues. If anything go with a P67 board. Known to work are Intel DP67BG and Asus P67 Pro or abouve.

You'll need a dedicated audio drive. I only see one in your list.

850W and GTX 550 TI? are you planning on playin games on this machine? If not you can drop to 500W PSU (seasonic X560 Gold maybe?) and a Silent GT210, GT520 or similar GPU.

All true, but I would keep a beefy power supply. From recent builds(and problems), I was informed about the +12V rail and how important it is. My i7 950 can pull 18 amps and my PSU was rated for 16 amps on split +12V rails. Now I have a single rail supply rated at 54 amps and it works much better. +12V also feeds all the drives and fans so don't skimp. Having just finished a P67 build, I am less than impressed. It doesn't hold a candle to my X58A/i7 950 setup. I could easily overclock any of my rigs, but they are stable and powerful as is, so stock timings for me

Beefy is good, but too big isn't. The Seasonic X560 gold has 46A on a single rail. It cost ~$60 less than the Corsair 850 gold. The X560 will be more efficient at the operating power requirements of the proposed system especially on lower loads. SNB platform draws less power than the X58 i7 9xxs.
