Default pasting midi notes deletes others

Why is it when i want to copy some notes and paste them, the notes that are on different keys delete themselves? This is very annoying and frustrating to work with, almost impossible to work with. Is this a bug or am i doing something wrong?

For a better example:

I have a drum beat. Hi hat on F1, Kick on C2, Snare on A2 (i cant remember the exact notes but this is just an example)

I delete a measure of the hi hat but want to keep the kick and snare. I copy a good take of the hihat and paste it. This deletes the other notes. Why???

It's annoying but a lot easier than recording a drum kit.

You're not doing anything wrong. It just does that.

You might want to change your grid from 16th notes to 32nds. Make your paste a little off, then slip it into the grid.

Thats a horrible work-around, why would they make it this way i wonder? I'll give it a go and see what happens, thanks.

Hmm, i don't believe so. I'll have to open up a project and make sure. Although i thought "midi merge" was to record midi data ontop of already existing midi data. Does that affect the editing as well?

You're doing something wrong.

For this scenario you have to merge the notes with the existing ones. Press Alt-M to merge the notes. Don't use paste.

Ah, i was hoping i was wrong. Thanks!
I still dont see the purpose of deleting notes when pasting. I guess Pro Tools is still a baby when it comes to midi editing.

I like the way PT works. If you want to replace a section with another, you simply paste over it. No need to delete notes to "make room" for the copied notes - pasting will replace.
And if you want to combine two sections you just merge them.

I was just struggling with this as well - but just place your cursor and hit alt-m instead of paste, it works just fine.

PT Lover saved the day and thank you ! I had the same problem when creating drum patterns. I got a good feel going on with 16 hi hats what with velocities and occasional slip to give it that real sound and feel, but every time I copied a few bars of it,the kick and snare were deleted so alt m is the way forward !

Here is my bands latest single - cheers
