Default Time to upgrade ?'s

I've been searching threads about "PT 10- worth it?", but only seeing references to upgrading from 9. I've got 8, and the wife is offering to buy me 10 for Christmas. Is this a no-brainer to take her up on it? What would I find notably different?

I get concerned as my system is getting a little old and outdated, but is really stable and I've avoided doing any fixing while not broke: 10.5.8, 2007 (?)Mac Pro dual 2.66, 5GB, 002r. In addition to comments about going from 8 to 10, I'd appreciate thoughts about what people would do with this set-up. Feel like I've gotten fabulous use from 002r but wondering how much longer, a big new mega-size mac pro is appealing, but wonder if I should just put some more RAM in and drive this one into the ground, upgrading OS scares me, but do I need to with PT 10?

Appreciate any thoughts- thanks

First off you're going to need a minimum of 10.6.7 and preferably 10.6.8 for PT10. Keep in mind that the 002R has been eol'd as has the 003 family.

According to MacTracker it looks like you have an original MacPro with the Woodcrest processor which is on Avid's approved list. That's good news. Also good news is you can go as high as 10.7.5 for an OS but that seems to give people problems with PT and 10.7.4 would be the better choice there. And you can have a max of 32 gig in that machine. Of course this all depends on exactly what machine you have. Go to About This Mac in the Apple menu and you'll see exactly what machine you have - posting that would help.

Thanks so much for the info. (What's EOL- end of line?- I'm figuring something like that.) My Mac has Intel Xeon processor. Model 1,1 4 cores, 2 processors.

I guess I can go ahead and update OS regardless- have just been reluctant because everything has been so stable. Will I run into any problems moving to 10.7.4 with my current PT8? Whats the world of resale for a machine like this were I to think about new Mac Pro, or am I silly to worry about that for a while longer? Just load more RAM into this and drive a couple more years? Should I be thinking about new interface sometime soon? What are good options?

End of Life

what resellers are getting for used machies http://www.megamacs.com/new_show_cat...gic=ADT-MacPro
depending ou your local market you should be able to get $500ish for a 1.1

the 1.1s will run 10, there just not approved for HDX cards
and there video cards aren't the grated if you want to run full 1080p quicktimes

Back to the 002r, its at the end of support, but it does work with 10, but the cool part is; 10(and 9) allow you to use near any interface from any company
