Registered upgrade question

My son ended up buying a legit Academic version of protools m-powered .I was sent a link and when you register the software you get up upgrade to 7.4 for free which is great of coarse which is good until end of March .I guess they send the upgrade by a link on digi's web site.The question i have is has anyone done any sort of upgrade like this i want to reformat his hard drive and maybe add another drive.Do the upgrades have to be installed or can you save them to a disc or dvd for future reinstalls.Thanks

7.4 is a full install. You dont need to install it over 7.3 or anything else.

Now i read that if i install the 7.4 i will loose alot of the features the Academic version has.(newly released 7.4) can not be made to display timecode for any price. Academic 7.3.1 not only can display timecode, it displays it out of the box, and has full OMF/AAF import capabilities. If you want to run a version of Pro Tools that is fit for postproduction)That's a quote from this guys web page.I'm so confused now
