Re: remove vocal distrotion
If it is just a little bit of clipping, I have a few times fixed the waveform with the pencil tool. Wholesale distortion may not be possible to fix.

Re: remove vocal distrotion
I don't believe it's possible to remove distortion on a vocal track, regardless of what gear/plugins you might have at your disposal.
If someone has a solution, I'd be glad to hear it. Distortion on a vox track is unforgivable though. Sounds like the engineer did a crap job. |

Re: remove vocal distrotion
There are a few plugins that are supposed to intelligently declip audio. The only one I can think of is Sonic Foundry's Noise Reduction. This plugin has a declipper function but is only available as a PC DirectX plugin. I have not heard the results with my own ears so I couldn't say how effective it is. I'm sure it would probably help a bit though.

Yeah I used the noise reduction functions on it and it sounded bad, but did you say you tried the de-clipper? Because I didn't.

Re: remove vocal distrotion
Hey Corey. I've tried the noise reduction plug-in you're referring to using Sound Forge (back in my PC days). It's not very good at all. Although I rarely used it, it does a crappy job at removing affected audio, although it's not bad at cleaning up and restoring vinyl.

Isn't there a new BombFactory plug in for this?

Re: remove vocal distrotion
There is a way that I picked up from some LA eng.s that works pretty well. Use the Digi limiter and keep bringing the threshold down till the clipping goes away. What I think is going on is that if the Thresh. is just below the clipping level the Limiter soft knees the edg of the clip and so rounds out those square clip edges. Damb now I gave away the trick and they will have to kill me.
Any way this trick has done some awazing fixes on otherwise unusable VO tracks. SK |

Re: remove vocal distrotion
noiz2 has it, learn to love it, make it worse and call it an effect, send it out through a large speaker and record it back in again.
or, mix two versions of the same voice together with one them out of phase (180). Using a sample sized track slip, experiment until you are left with just the distortion. You can now reintroduce this result to the orginal source, phase reversed, and see if the mixing of these two gives you a better sound. Let me know if it works, and I'll use it. Just kidding. |
