Default 5.1--- feels shakey

But still got the feeling thi9ngs where running sluggish. yesterday recording a drum track i set the inputs like i normaly do set pt to record a stereo trk hit play on my mpc and no sound was coming through the speakers but the meters where registring activity. so i recorded the trck without hearing it. stoped pushed play back and it played. whuts going on digi .

Are you using any RTAS (i.e. native) plug-ins? If so, you're experiencing what native users have dealt with all along. The more your processor has to deal with audio, the clunkier the interface will feel.

I'll add to that, Lee...(paraphrasing from p.46 PT reference guide) as you raise the CPU Usage Limit in the Hardware Setup window, you slow down the screen redraws and UI responsiveness. You can also experience poor automation accuracy on plug-in parameters and mute data.
Try the recommended settings of:
H/W Buffer size = 128 samples
CPU Use Limit = 65%
As for the other behavior you experienced, I havn't seen THAT one on 5.1 (yet ). I have, however, experienced weirdness on tracks with both RTAS AND TDM plugins. Upon opening previously saved sessions, RTAS/TDM tracks were dead, no audio, no meters. So I click on the plugins and lo and behold, Audio & Meters! I had to do the same thing on each track with RTAS/TDM plugs, and then all was well.
BTW, sessions from 5.01 translated fine, and waves TDM plugs that were switched to RTAS (to free up the farm) retained their settings and quality (no scientific tests yet...). I'll have more to report this weekend I hope.

If you close 1 plug at a time (mainly the Reverbs) you will discover that the system goes into super mode with instant re-draws..

You can bounce and import back to session with the tracks and the plugs that you closed and it sounds just as good--and the offending plug is now closed.

Re-open the plug and hit the solo's for the tracks and the plug--then bounce and hit spot window and drag into session.

You could also use audiosuite for any number of plugs, but to close those (oink) hoggish Reverbs--the Bounce thing is necessary--(example--Stereo guitar + truverb on stereo aux).

I had Realverb--TruVerb--and DVerb open with the L1+(I have this open all the time on the master) and I was sweatin bullits with the re-draws and system bog..The bounce thing allowed me to close the TruVerb (oink) and my system went into super speed.

I think the bounced guitar track sounds just as good as having the verb open...

I am also experiencing the dead track issue from perviously saved 5.01 sessions. I guess this is the first BUG in 5.1!!!

Digi, you can bet you will hear more on this one!

I've experienced a noticeable slow down also but I believe it's beacause my computer isn't quite as fast for the increased power of 5.1.

I have a G3 300mhz Beige Mac and I think it's becoming a Pro Tools dinosaur although it was great for 5.0

That's the way it goes with software updates. They give you the features you want as long as you keep buying new computers

Try updating to Cs2 and 24bit mixer Cs3. I had the same problem and this seemed to fix it.

Well, The dead track issue went away. But boy oh boy is this thing cranky. Not getting anywhere near the same track counts in 5.1 as 5.01 . DAE errors on any session with more than 24 tracks. In 5.01 I could easily do twice as many tracks before DAE bus errors. Had to switch back to 5.01 to get the session done and get paid!! And guess where the money is going? That's right. A new farm card! Because I can't mix in 5.1 with a mix+ system. At least I have my health and a good sense of humor....
