Re: Increase in PT performance going from 32GB RAM to 64?
AHCI/NVMe make little to no difference in cheesegrater and trashcan because of PCI 2.0 speeds but currently you have lot more choice and bigger capacities with the newer NVMe compared to older AHCI which are no longer even manufactured as far as I know

Re: Increase in PT performance going from 32GB RAM to 64?
Yep it is all about being to use the latest/current SSD drives. NVMe is more efficient that AHCI. Designed exactly for what Flash etc needs... actually its roots go back to work by Intel to support what eventually became Optane (not actually based on Flash). AHCI is some old old stuff.

Re: Increase in PT performance going from 32GB RAM to 64?
i personally don't see an added value for BOOTING with a NVMe SSD vs 2.5" SSD.
now if you want to take into consideration their respective read/write speeds then that is where all the added value is for using a NVMe SSD vs 2.5" SSD they are night and day performance wise there but if you don't need the additional read/write speeds it's not a good upgrade/change in my mind

Re: Increase in PT performance going from 32GB RAM to 64?
No. The session to Disk Cache (RAM) takes place where ever the session Audio files are stored. It isn’t dependent on the boot drive (unless the session files are stored there)

Re: Increase in PT performance going from 32GB RAM to 64?
I did not know that, thanks. So given my system (below) would it make sense to replace the original PT session and FCPX storage spinner hard drives and put some 2.5 SSDs in those sled thingies that go in the hard drive bays ?

Replacing spinners with solid state always makes sense if you have the budget

Re: Increase in PT performance going from 32GB RAM to 64?
Thanks, one more question as per my system I currently have the Samsung 951 ACHI PCIe Boot Drive. While I do have one more PCIe slot in my Mac Pro the (4th/top one) but am I correct in assuming I can't or should not try, to mix ACHI and NVMe given it seems that ACHI is no longer available in 500 - 1k GB options.

Re: Increase in PT performance going from 32GB RAM to 64?
As long as you don't try to RAID them together I don't see a problem in having AHCI and NVMe drives living happily together
