Default video out: aja kona or BM decklink

Hi all,
I'm setting up a new PT HD native rig, I'm wondering wether the BM deckink range is still "wonky" with PTHD 12.8 (read plenty of issues here and on gearslutz) or if it it works reliable today.
The aja Kona range on the other hand receives nothing but praise, but the price difference between the LHi (cheapest) and the BM mini monitor for example is huge. I only need 1080 output.
Is it out of question to use a regular graphics card, for example a basic Geforce type?
I don't need the ultimate accuracy to use genlocking
Thank you very much for the insight.

Touch BM at your peril on mac. If you don't need genlock, then AJA t-tap if you have thunderbolt and mac, if win then I am sure Alan 8dB will chip in. If you have pcie on mac and no t-bolt go to Ebay for an AJA Kona3.

Thanks for the tips, especially about the used Kona 3. Have seen some really cheap. I'm on mac OS, but no thunderbolt.

You will need the leads or breakout box for hdmi. It's the same card as my IOXT which runs on thunderbolt and has its own io. Flawless

I've got an AVID Mojo DX which runs pretty solidly generally. So happy with that myself.

But yesterday set up a system for a colleague replacing a very flakey BlackMagic Decklink Extreme 3D with an AJA Kona LHi. Must admit those AJA cards are pretty damn good!

Was a flawless swap, quick driver install and then the pleasure of the AJA control panel app, as Mike Aiton has mentioned in many AJA posts, it's just brilliant, you can see in GUI form, exactly what is coming in and out of your card, as in the frame rate and video format of your gen-lock signal etc.

Considering the second hand price of these LHi's (around $150 or so) and the hassle-free installation, I'd def go with one of those if I was looking for a video interface.

Cheers

Ray

Hi again!
how about the AJA Io Express? A bit cheaper than the LHi and provides HDMI out.

I got a used AJA LHi on ebay for dirt cheap. I did replaced the onboard fan as it was making an awful noise. It ran perfectly on OSX 10.10.5. I have now switch to Win10, and it's working great!

hello, as i am interested in getting a kona card for video playback in pro tools 12.5 hd native i think about getting a cheap used lhi card too...
there are some comments about the noisy fan - is it an easy to swap, standard size fan?
also is the kona 3g noisy too and is there any advantage over the lhi?
i just want to use the hdmi out of the card for a display, no capturing or video editing...
cheers,
karsten

I have a Kona 3 Card I can sell on the cheap. I've moved to all Thunderbolt Systems and the Kona 3 was in my previous rig. It's just sitting in a box in my machine room.

No idea what it's worth. Name your price and BO via PM takes it.
