Default Brand New Maxed Out iMac GUI LAG

Hello hello,

Just got an extremely lovely maxed out iMac, to find out that i've got some extremely annoying GUI latency. Scrolling around my sessions feels just gross. Zooming lags, sliding clips is laggy. IDK what to do, certainly cant be a hardware issue.

i7 quad core 4.2ghz 7700k
16gb ddr4 ram
500 gb ssd
radeon pro 580 8gb video memory
mac os 10.12.5
pt 12.8

Thats rough... I was looking at those to try and alleviate my 9173 errors.

Do you have an external monitor hooked up?

No external monitors. Just the built in 5k. The computer is hands down magical and amazing. This has to be some sort of avid and apple communication issue with software ? Idk

look at preferences in operation and display. Make sure you are not holding a lot of hard drive for recording. This will lag it every time you hit play. Also look at activity monitor while it lags and see if something seems to lag it. You should be rocking big time with that set up. Also you are using an external hard drive correct?

I have the same problem with my new iMac. Working off a USB3 drive, but using disk cache to load the session audio to RAM. Every other program (Ableton, Logic) runs like a dream!

i7 quad core 4.2ghz
24gb ddr4 ram
500 gb ssd
radeon pro 575 4gb video memory
mac os 10.12.5
PT 12.8.1

Exact same setup. Came from a 2013 trash can MP. 6 core / 500gb ssd / 32gb ram / d500 vid. Same thing.

Out of nowhere it started in 11. That caused me to upgrade to 12. Didn't fix so I "upgraded" to the mp. Didn't fix. Then I got lucky and a got a great offer on the mp and sold it. Bought the latest iMac (love the screen). Didn't fix.

It's crazy. Any buffer setting it's unusable. My cpu usage is like 3%. Sessions on external ssd drive. What the f*?

Logic running like a champ.

It's been a well documented bug for years and some said it was fixed with Sierra but not for me...

The latest Pro Tools update, 12.8.2, acknowledges this program and suggests the following fix in the Release Notes:

Optimizations

Improving Graphic Performance on iMac 4k/5k

Graphic performance issues such as stuttering and sluggishness can be significantly reduced by changing the iMac color profile to “sRGB IEC61966-2.1”. To make this change:

Click on the Apple icon and choose System Preferences

Navigate to the Display pane, then click on the Color tab

In the Display Profile list, select “sRGB IEC61966-2.1”

my brand new 5k retina imac with Radeon Pro 580 (8GB of VRAM) does this too

it feels awful -- seriously messing up my editing speed. feels like im editing on a 2005 machine with a spinning platter hard drive

i loaded up PT12 on an old 2008 macbook pro and the graphics speed is twice as good.

i ran PT10 on my old 2010 imac for years before upgrading to the new imac and PT12 at the same time. what i noticed upon this change is that avid have rewritten the graphics interface code, and it sucks. i hate to say it, but PT12 now feels like a ****ty java application.

i suspect that they are not utilising the power of the graphics card and are using really poor code for redrawing the screen.

i tried doing the "change the color profile" thing, but that did nothing.

avid need to rewrite the graphics code to support Apple Metal. i'm sure they know this. the retina's have now been out for many years. that is many years of editors working on machines running like it's 2005. thats poor form.

one solution is to make the app run in low resolution mode

right click on the app "Pro Tools" and select "Get Info" and then tick "Open in Low Resolution"

it will look like ass, but it will be fast again.

come on avid, fix this up.

Take a look at the PT12 subforum and you'll see people talking about gui lag with PT12.8.x It's not necessarily a hardware issue.
