Default SDI audio embedding?

HI all

i realize this is a bit uncommon. We are mostly a video facility, but we have a room where PT is running with SDI video cards (I'm being vauge as I have the option to use Avid DNXIO, Nitris DX or Blackmagic). The PT and Avid machines are in a control room. I want to be able to reach PT in my video suites, where only SDI cables run ( I can switch the screens), so it would be very beneficial if the audio out of PT would be embedded in the SDI signal. Does anybody ever tried this? and if yes, which card? in a video application most avid and BMD cards embed audio in the SDI, so the hardware is there, its just a question if PT would do it (and if yes, how many channels). I know I should be running AES, and in the mixing room i will, but in the avid suite there is only SDI and cables for the monitors and keyboard.

anybody ever tried it? even better, is anybody willing to test? I dont have my PT machine here for at least another week

Thanks
Balazs

Maybe this is a solution for you. Not for the faint of wallet, though....

I've used Sonifex embedders/de-embedders before (it was in a similar HD-SDI infrastructure) and a colleague of mine used to use Blackmagic Multibridges to do that to connect to HDCAM-SR decks using just SDI rather than having to install loads of AES cabling. All worked fine.

You answered yourself in the title. Get an SDI embedder to go in-line from your PT SDI video out to the router or however you're getting to the video suite. Feed it with your main mix.

If you're asking about doing it straight from PT the answer is officially "unsupported". (The hardware is there, the API is there, and every other program can do it :) ) If I recall you can't even use the DNXIO as an audio playback engine. That would be pretty convenient.

It's not supported because PT would have to use the SDI device as the Playback Engine, right? Just thinking this through.

We have been successfully using AES to SDI Embedders/De-Embedders for years. They work with no issue.

Another option would be the Avid MTRX Interface with the SDI card installed. Pricey but should work.. Actually, if anyone is doing this please chime in. Would love to know if it works.

Have done this using a BM Decklink HD card, using the black magic audio as playback engine in PT. 8 channels worked just fine.

Exactly (according to Avid). It can work, I've tested it in the past. But PT got real flaky when I did it. It sounds like the above poster had better luck.

I have done something similar in the past.

I have gone AES into SDI embedding boxes - both the AJA boxes and an Evertz. Both work well. When using the AJA boxes, I had my AES on a patch bay, and would patch into the boxes.

Good luck,

Randall
