Default Simple native format audio editor

So I love pro tools really......

But I have 50G of voice memo data from the last 10 years in 8bit, 16bit, 8Khz, 22kHz, m4a and other formats. Is there an audio editor that can simply open files in their native format, let me do some simple cuts and then export the cuts (ie... dice up 2 hours into songs) in the original format (whatever it is).......

I have tried,
Logic -- nope
Soundtrack -- nope
Audacity --- so close but the mono option is too weird and it doesn't automatically select the original format (or give you enough detail as to what it was).....
Wave Pad -- nope
Garageband -- never

Any help mucho appreciate!!
-Lee

If you don't mind me asking... why would you want to keep them in their original format?

Would scaling them to a 44.1k wav not make the whole process a lot easier, and let you play them where or whenever you like?

Yeah. There's something to be said for uniformity. Besides, you can't edit a compressed format without double encoding (additional loss of quality).

Mostly these are old gig recordings, song ideas and rehearsals.......

Most are in lower bit, resolution formats and hence reasonably small file sizes...... Though could certainly upsample into PT edit and save as MP3's I was hoping for a quicker and simpler process.....

Turns out that http://twistedwave.com/ can open these in native format and save to same. You can even do some simple edits (tale out crap between songs), name the markers and batch export the regions in just about any format..... just what I was looking for. Diced up 1 hour recording in less than 10 minutes...... next time will be more like 5.

Many of these recordings have serious overs, crowd noise etc.... just keeping the quality the same and file size/time minimal was my goal......

You are right though that I detect a small loss in the resulting files as compared to the original. Most likely a second round f encoding on the output files...... not too bad though......

Thanks......

Well for any interested there actually IS a fully native compressed file editor...... At least for what I was looking for this one is darned near perfect. Split the files natively, edit all the ID tags in the splits, export all the splits in the same format with no extra conversion..... blindingly fast file opens and exports..... Interface is so so (maybe I will like it better in a few days) but gets the job done.....

Fission..... http://rogueamoeba.com/fission/ $32.......

BTW.... Upsampling all this stuff to 44.1 would take my roughly 50GB and turn it into ~2TB....... not at all necessary for this stuff !!!

Thanks again,
-Lee
