How come when I try to "Import Session Data" into a brand new session ( PT LE 6.4/002R ) the file type is always = "Pro Tools 5.1 session"... ??
Clearly, the source is PT ( LE OR HD ) 6.4 !!

I've wondered the same thing. It's probably because they haven't re-written anything since then, just fixed bugs. We are all really still on PT 5.1cs99.

Because the last time the actual format of the session file changed was in version 5.1. In other words, you can open your 6.4 session files on PT 5.1 (this is a good thing). But you can't open them in 5.0, because there were no stereo tracks back then.

Okay, just so I get it totally right - the session file format has evolved since 5.1 (e.g. faders to +12 in 6.4, track colors in 6.7), but everything's backward-compatible to 5.1. If you open a 6.7 session in 5.1, you lose your colors, faders above +6 get pushed back to +6, etc, but it opens. You can't open a 6.7 (or even 5.1) session on PT 5.0 or earlier.
