Really annoying recording problem. help?
this has also been posted to em411 and CDM, my apologies for readers of those forums...
I'm recording my brother's new album right now, and we're having a really annoying problem. For various reasons we're forced to record onto a Roland VS-880 (digital 8-track)...I want to do the overdubbing and mixing in protools, though, so I hooked up the 880 to my m-audio 410. I'm syncing them through MIDI and sending two tracks into my computer at a time. Should be somewhat straightforward... but for some reason I'm getting this really weird wow and flutter stuff! it's not on the original recording, only when I record into ProTools...and it's not in the same spots every time, it seems totally random. Here's an example of the accordian track screwing up: http://www.theamazingrolo.net/blog/bend.wav I'm using the analog inputs, since the spdif inputs don't seem to work at all. Could that be related? I didn't think so, but I'm at a total loss. Any ideas as to what this could be? My setup: Roland VS-880EX, iBook G4 1.33 (10.4.6), M-audio 410, external hard drive (USB 2.0), ProTools M-Powered 7.1. The drivers are all up to date, as far as I know. Any help would be really really great, this is bothering me enormously. |

Re: Really annoying recording problem. help?
The problem is very likely that you need to clock those systems together via some kind of digital clock - SPDIF optical or RCA or ADAT, if possible.
Either set Pro Tools to clock to the VS-880 or vice versa - this will keep the sample clocks locked when doing a transfer and you won't have the drifting problem. |
