Default Hard drive setup questions

Hello, I’m about to get a late 2012 Mac mini which will have two ssd drives in it. I was just wondering how to best set it up for pro tools. The main hard drive will be the system drive with pro tools installed. I use a lot of virtual instruments and also guitar rig for recoding guitar so I was wondering if I can have my pro tools sessions and my vi sample libraries together on the second drive or should I get a third external ssd for just the sample libraries or session files?

Thanks for your help.

I would have the libraries on a separate drive to your work/ recording drive. Maybe use your internal SSD for the libraries, and get an external 7200 rpm spinner to work on. Plus, of course, a second external drive to back up your work drive to.

If the size of your system SSD is enough for PT sessions I would just have them (audio) there. Put sample libraries on dedicated SSD for best throughput. Use external for backups.

Never record to your system drive.

Are ssd drives ok to share system and pt sessions? I was thinking of getting a Samsung t5 ssd for my sessions.

Been doing that since 2013 when I got my first PCIe SSD with giga theoughput. Far less problems than dedicated spinners ever

The samsung T5 is a great little drive for sessions and stuff, we have 10 of them here for various uses on MacBooks so yes to that. Very stable and good price. Get atleast a 500GB but 1TB is even better.

No offence, but I would not be recommending a traditional HDD to anyone in 2020.

I literally just looked up the price of a 500GB Samsung EVO 860 for a mate today and it was under $90. That’s Aussie dollars and nothing in this country is cheap.

Personally, I think you’d have to be crazy to buy an HDD these days when SSDs are so cheap.

Still good for backups, you get more TB for your money
