Which output on Omni for monitors
I'm about to upgrade my M-box interface to an Avid Omni and need some help on what's the best outputs for monitoring.. I guess I can connect my Genelec monitors directly to the "TRS OUT 1 and 2" (as mentioned in the Omni user guide), but what about the ANALOG OUT and AES EBU OUT?
I am also thinking about monitoring LCR with it and then the ANALOG OUT and AES EBU OUT is my only options right? What is the difference between them? And last, if I get an "Avid DB25 - XLRm Digisnake" to use with the analog out, do I connect to my monitors directly with the cable (or in this case directly to my Genelec sub which sends the signals to the monitors through it)? |

Re: Which output on Omni for monitors
*TRS for the secondary Alt Monitors or Mirror main.
*AES-out for some other volume controllers Dig-In. Are these Digital Gen's? *The db25 out (8 channels) is overkill for stereo alone

Re: Which output on Omni for monitors
What do you mean with "secondary Alt Monitors or Mirror main"?
I've got a pair of Genelec 8040 (if that's what you mean with Gen's)! |

Re: Which output on Omni for monitors
You are going to want to spend some time with the manual on the OMNI as it also is capable of doing monitor and source switching(multiple sets of speakers and sources). Assuming you also have an HDN or HDX card?

Yes I'll be getting HD native thunderbolt with it. I read something about the Alt feature on Omni.
But still.. is the TRS my best option for output to my main monitors? |

Re: Which output on Omni for monitors
It is concerning that you keep asking this question. On three levels 0. How do we know exactly what you want to do? Or know all the other patch bays, monitor controllers, headphone/distribution amps, etc. you might have? (And no we really provably do not want to know) 1. The TRS output is obviously put there to make minimal system hookup to a stereo monitors easy (so even if you cannot do anything else start there). And 2. If you just would read the few pages on monitor control capabilities in the Omni User Guide you will know all the things this will do and be able to sort through all your own needs. If you are stuck following that documentation then ask, pointing to exactly the thing in the documentation that is not making sense to you.

Re: Which output on Omni for monitors
I have actually read the user guide but it didn't tell me anything about when to use the outputs and for what. I usually work in post houses where everything is already set up for me, and I'm a completely newbie to setting up my on system.

Re: Which output on Omni for monitors
Here's a basic rundown:
Forget about using any of the digital outputs for monitors. It would be pointless since very few monitors have digital inputs, and it's usually only the very expensive ones (the 8040 does not). If you only are using 2 monitors for stereo, then by far the simplest solution is to just use the TRS outs. You will need 2 TRS to XLR male cables. If you want to use any more than 2 monitors, whether for LCR, or for a second alternate pair of stereo monitors, then you will need an analog DB25 to XLR snake, such as this one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/acces...20db25&index=1 There are cheaper ones such as from Hosa and other brands as well. Be careful not to confuse what a DB25 cable is versus the proprietary Avid Digilink connector, which is the proprietary connector by Avid that hooks the Omni up to the HD card or thunderbolt unit, even though they look a little similar. |

Re: Which output on Omni for monitors
Then just use the TRS if you are just working with two monitors, and you have no outboard monitor control system. It is exactly why those TRS sockets are put there. If you are going to monitor LCR (don't do this unless mixing for LCR, and if you are running a subwoofer that is not LCR) then use the analog out. Again too many things to work out what you are just doing, get the TRS outs running to your monitors (and sub... Read the documentation for that) and just get started. Room tuning/treatment monitor placement, monitor calibration are likely the real things to worry about.
