I'm sure, it's a great piece of hardware, but i'm a little aware of having a non- supported set-up as i don't want Windows at all for the moment. Every little problem i will have, may be attribute to the Hackintosh and not Avid.

My second concern is about the water cooling. I'm not a big fan of it. But not a specialist…

And third is, if I want to save bucks by buying a PC, and make it work with OSX, why don't I just buy the exact same components that the protools PC and just mount it myself. I guess, it's just 4 hours more of work and maybe quite a few bucks save.

If there are OSX users of the protools PC, here in the DUC, i would be very happy to have their opinions with different setups.

I am in the same situation, share your concerns, and agree that an unsupported system (any PC hacked as OSX) may not be a good idea for professional work. I prefer to pay the extra money and have a system that is always supported as OSX.

Maybe i will change my mind, i have two months to decide which way to go :
HDX or HDN, new Mac Pro or another alternatives.
For the moment, and because of how rock solid was and still is my 2008 Mac Pro with HD2, i'm in total confidence with osX and Mac Pro. It's true it's more expensive, but for the moment, it worth it.

If you want to do it alone and build your own - good luck and have fun.

If you want to be fully supported, pay Avid £500 for a year for a support contract - or being supported is meaningless as they won't take your call. Oh yes and don't forget get a Mac Pro or a mac mini and a Magna chassis (for HDX). But Milk seeing as you are not running a gen locked video card I suspect this May not be the option for you.

Personally I let PTPC do the research and the sourcing of components and the build and configure. Job done and I dare say it better than I could do it. I also choose not to pay "the Avid Support Tax".

There is no penalty as Tom puts it for running OSX on PTPC. I choose to run OSX as I know it better and all my office software and photography stuff is OSX.

Just out of curiosity: did you ever update the OSX after installing it? I always found it to be very tricky (or impossible without serious re-tuning) on Hackintoshes.

Really?

It's a hack - that is the penalty.
By it's very nature it is unstable and unprofessional.
And depending on where you live, illegal.

As for locking your vid card.
I wouldn't worry about it. I've never had any issues running without lock. I haven't turned on my BB generator for years. Back when running tape .... dif story. Now, it's a thing of the past, IMHO.

What would be the difference ? A lot of guys, here in the DUC have built there PCs and have made great and stable set up, but they are usually with windows, not OS X. Maybe that's true that if they (protools PC) have a good support team, it would be a great plus.
But as i understand the Hackintoshes, it's not the build that is critical but the tweak, after the build, and as Branko says with some updates.

Will they offer support if you say you are on an not qualified setup ? And even on the DUC, you would have a lot of answers saying that you are under an unsupported set up.

Don't get me wrong. Lock is surely critical when they are several hardware involved, and i'm sure it's better and safe to have it. As i said, i never noticed critical drifts in sync, on the more than 40 feature movies, documentaries, artist movies and so on, i worked on, in 6 years without gen lock, in my editing room. And i never had an issue of sync when i went to the mixing stage. And, as said Kasper, it's a little an old story, if you are reading the video internally, IMHO.

Well, i hope it will be a good setup for you. I would be certainly very interesting to buy one. Maybe next year for the version 2.
