There's actually six soft keys on the D-Command, where user can assign functions (on multiple pages). I have Preview, write to selection, write to end, focus strip on/off etc... accessible all the time. Very convenient!

-for tweaking plug-ins, there are more knobs on D-Command, but a lot less feedback. It's easy and fast to go through pages of plug-in parameters on Dock. Labeling is dynamic, feedback is better. iPad is more complicated, but it does A LOT. There are edit functions on the iPad that D-Command never dreamed of having.

-D-Command functions are pretty much fixed and not customizable like they are on S3/Dock.

Thanks to everybody all those great infos !

Is there any way to test a D-Command just «*out of the box «* without being connected to a PT ultimate ?
When the unit is turned on only some of the switches turn on (and it is written «*offline*») meaning ... if I can’t see it in front of me and test it ... i take some risk ))anyone would have a solution (to be able to test a unit )

Thanks !!

Phil

Tuomas is right. I may be overlooking some aspects of the D-Command in my short review.

Regarding the test, you should be able to go into "Vegas" mode which will tell you if every light and fader motor is working. I don't remember the keys to enable that mode, but it is computer-independent.

Hey, you should be able to run the Vegas tests in offline mode as it has nothing to do with Pro Tools.

Vegas mode:

To enter Vegas mode: Press UTILITY > Test > LED > Vgas (Vegas).

Best of Luck

Yep. Enjoy! In about two days you'll wonder how you ever worked without it.

Cut to 2022- I have a client who has an old D-Command (no X-Mon). He just obtained the 2021 PT Standard license. I tried to walk him through the menus remotely today- on a Mac Mini. In Setup he has the peripherals section, with either EUCON or Legacy Surface Controllers as an option on this menu. No matter which option he chose, after the scanning stopped, his D-Command did not respond. One time, he received a warning about not having the proper drivers. Would it be possible to obtain these D-Command drivers somewhere and run this surface on his standard PT configuration? Or is it still only limited to Ultimate software? Please let me know. Thanks.

There are no D-Command drivers. The functionality is baked into Pro Tools, which is part of the reason those old control surfaces still work with current versions despite the lack of active support for some years now. An ultimate license is required...
