It's actually not entirely outrageous.

It's been said by Avid that PT9 is really "8.5" with a new name. And if you really think about it... other than ADC, open CoreAudio/ASIO use... are there really that many things different about Pro Tools 9 from 8 in terms of actual coding that you can tell?

Sure it's more stable, and all down to one version instead of 3... but none of those things really required intensive rewriting of code. We're talking fairly minor changes to the overall software, regardless of how immensely it changed it's usability.

Now... to expect a 64-bit Pro Tools by March would definitely be optimistic, but mid to late 2011? Not unrealistic. They've given us a tasty bone to chew on over the past few months... but the overhaul that is really necessary for RTAS improvement and 64-bit support has been long overdue, and I think we'll see it sooner than we think (but not March, soon).

Why not just use Vienna Ensemble Pro?

I don't understand why people want to have to load 16GB worth of samples every time they change sessions. With VE pro your samples remain loaded, and your session files stay small and open quickly.

If a "64 bit" version of pro tools was released, the only way it would be useful to me is if there was a way to keep the samples loaded in RAM and change sessions.
