Default Creating Space In Instrumental/ Vocals Sit On Instrumental

I cant seem to find out how to get my vocals to sit within the beat. I know you have to use EQ to get it done, but which EQ do you use 7 band, 4 band, i mean how do I go about doing it with the EQ, I know everything depend on Frequencies, and all but how do I get to that step with the EQ. And are there any certain EQ's I should try to download to get this done, I'm working w/ the EQ's that came with Pro-Tools 8 currently.
