Default 64bit

hello, the only reason i am currently not updating from PT8 to PT9 is that i may switch from cubase 5 (or later) as soon as there is a full 64bit version, incl. adapted RTAS plug-ins. are there any news? thanks, marco

Except for being able to use more RAM, 64 bits won't buy you much in a DAW. Yes, you will be able to use more VI but how many of you are running into problems with not enough RAM? I don't use many VI so 64 bits means little to me.

well, as soon as you are working with orchestral libraries, 64bit is a must just because of RAM indeed - looking forward to.

There are ways of getting around that if you want to work in ProTools.

i have been using separate machines for years, but any way around it is not as elegant as having it inside, so to say - the same counts for sibelius, actually.

So 64 Bit means little to you.

A single instance of Sample tank 2 can run over 500MB easily.

64 bit does not only increase the amount of memory available to the host computer, but also increases the amount of throughput in the CPU.

With myself only having 3 GB of RAM, i plan to upgrade. I would like pro tools to be able to use a machine to its fullest extent.

IMO, it should be here before 2012.

who told you that?

As much as id like to believe it, i doubt it. There is no way they would script protools 9 in 32bit, and then re write to take advantage of 64bit. It wouldn't make sence.

It's actually not entirely outrageous.

It's been said by Avid that PT9 is really "8.5" with a new name. And if you really think about it... other than ADC, open CoreAudio/ASIO use... are there really that many things different about Pro Tools 9 from 8 in terms of actual coding that you can tell?

Sure it's more stable, and all down to one version instead of 3... but none of those things really required intensive rewriting of code. We're talking fairly minor changes to the overall software, regardless of how immensely it changed it's usability.

Now... to expect a 64-bit Pro Tools by March would definitely be optimistic, but mid to late 2011? Not unrealistic. They've given us a tasty bone to chew on over the past few months... but the overhaul that is really necessary for RTAS improvement and 64-bit support has been long overdue, and I think we'll see it sooner than we think (but not March, soon).

Why not just use Vienna Ensemble Pro?

I don't understand why people want to have to load 16GB worth of samples every time they change sessions. With VE pro your samples remain loaded, and your session files stay small and open quickly.

If a "64 bit" version of pro tools was released, the only way it would be useful to me is if there was a way to keep the samples loaded in RAM and change sessions.
