Digi please restore this bin feature
It used to be, before PT7, that I could add new files to the bin (Soundminer) and they would always be visible (and automatically selected if they were mono), even if I was working with a selected subset of the bin. In other words, I could use Pro Tools FIND and type in "bark". I got a sorted selection of every region that contains "bark". If I did not like any of them I could search my libraries to find a sound called, say, "dog small yap" and use Soundminer to import it into Pro Tools. In previous versions I could always find it right away because it would show up in the list I was using at that moment. Even though it did not meet the "bark" search requirement it would still be visible. Now, though, I MUST manually cancel the FIND sort before I import the new file, otherwise it will only be visible if it matches the currently active sort. Either way, practical useage is HARDER now than it was. Generally I am forced to cancel FIND before importing anything, otherwise I will most likely not be able to see the new file. If I don't know exactly how the filename may appear in Pro Tools I may have to go back to Soundminer, look for the file again and figure out what I must search for in Pro Tools to find it again. The new search cancels my previous search until I rename the new file, which makes it vanish again until I search for it under its new name.
While I appreciate your effort to make sort active, it has taken away this very important convenience. Files MUST NOT VANISH immediately after renaming them! I'll gladly trade the new functions away to get the old behavior back, if that is the choice. I know people are always ragging on the bin functions but I was not one of them until now. Thanks for listening.

Re: Digi please restore this bin feature
I have to admit I was stoked about the live updating feature in the regions list for PT 7 until this very same problem hit me.
The live updating is helpful is narrowing your search as you type, you can see right away if you are searching the right keyword for that SFX you can't quite remember the exact abbreviated name for because you brought it in days ago. BUT... I used to work the same way as you Richard. I would shorten my list in the regions bin, look for the sound I wanted, then if I didn't have it, I would flip over to Soundminer and shoot back the file I did find. In the old way of working it would be conveniently located in the short list of related sounds I had been looking thru before my new import from SM. Not anymore, because most often if you have to go back to soundminer for a better sound, the description will be different for that file so it will contain different keywords from similar sounds that are already in PT, otherwise you most likely would have found it during your first search in Soundminer ...anyway... It would be good if the live updating of the regions list only worked while typing in the search criteria in PT, BUT renaming files in the list or bringing in new files to an already searched regions list would be ignored until the next search for whatever keyword you desire. I think that would give us the best of both worlds. Richard, as a work around at the moment, I use the prefix box in Soundminer (in the preferences dialog) to add the keyword to the sound I want to bring in from SM. Basically, when you find the "small dog yap" sound in soundminer, you tag it, then hit COMMAND-COMMA on your keyboard and type "bark" into the prefix box, which will amend all files you send out of SM with that word at the beginning of the file. It's a pretty convenient work around for the moment, because when you type Command-Comma in Soundminer, you are always deposited in the last field you were typing in, which puts you right back into the prefix field everytime. I agree that this new feature in PT does more harm than good in it's present form. Hopefully digi sees that and makes the right adjustment. Ryan |

Re: Digi please restore this bin feature
Yeah, I brought this up the week v7 came out. Around the same time as we stopped being able to import tracks properly. Hmmmm. Best workaround is still to sort the region bin descending and by modification date. Sux.

Re: Digi please restore this bin feature
Thats not a bad way round Stuart and i may have to try it out but i am quite methodical with my fx naming when i build them up within a session and not having them in alphabetical order would be a bit of a bummer (can you sense the OCD in me )

Here's another thread about the new FIND functionality. This from the TDM forum:

Re: Digi please restore this bin feature
Man, I have to disagree. I'm loving the new find function. If I wanted to see the new audio in the bin I'd sort my date modified and descending. That will bring the new audio to the top if the region list and make it very easy to find.
Peace, Brandon

Re: Digi please restore this bin feature
Iīve completely given up on the region list when I got soundminer. I import the PT-session to SM and "troll for new sounds" in SM. Itīs way more comfortable and faster than using using PTīs "features".
I re-spot sounds I already have in the session even when I have them already in the project just because itīs impossible to find what you need in PT. I donīt care about space-efficiency since space is cheap. I find it absolutely frustrating given the fact that the bin-request must be celebratig itīs tenth aniversary soon? Hey we should organize an international 10-years-of-bin-requests party somewhere or organize a "give us bins"-demonstration in front of Digi HQ? Isnīt this the most-ignored feature request? Frank.

Re: Digi please restore this bin feature
To me, the lamest part of the *new* region bin behavior is that now when new files are transferred in, they don't show up automatically (if you're viewing returns from a previous search in the region bin). In other words, if you just did a search for "porn bed squeaks" in PT, and then you transferred in some pig squeals with Soundminer, the just-transferred files would not show up until you did the "Show All" command, or did a search for "pig" or "squeal". It's like the search functionality is always active. I think the search should only be active for the search, not this "constantly updating" type of thing.
The old behavior was superior in this regard. Digi, please change this back! Hopefully I'm making sense here. S.

Re: Digi please restore this bin feature
Yes, Digi please restore this bin feature (or make it a selectable option).
I used to make an "xxx" region in every session and right before I went looking for extra sounds in Soundminer, I would select that "xxx" via the region bin find function. It was then easy to see the new Soundminer files coming into the region bin. My current workaround is, as others mentioned, sorting the region bin on creation/modification date and look for new sounds at the top or bottom of the list... Out of curiosity: do you use the long filenames in PT7 now, when copying sounds from Soundminer? I'm still using the 27 character limit (with .wav extension in the BWAV session) for compatibility reasons, but they are becoming obsolete (changing backup strategies and not much using older PT systems anymore).... Greetings, Thierry
