Noob question - Why mono bus as Output of a multichannel bus
hi there,
i have some sort of "noob" question and i am really interessted in your answers. why is protools offering me a Mono Bus for a multichannel output of eg a 5.1 Bus ? Life would be so much easier to have the option to filter this out as preference setting. or do i miss there any possibity on that ? Thank you, Best René

Re: Noob question - Why mono bus as Output of a multichannel bus
You might want a mono bus if you're sending to say a mono side chain input on a hardware compressor, but I get what you mean.
I got tired of seeing all the mono busses in the menu too so here's the fix. Go into the IO page and on the bus tab, you should be able to expand the 5.1 busses you're using and delete the sub paths/busses from there. That way when you're browsing for busses you'll just see the main attractions. I create separate mono specific busses and prefer them over using the subs. |

you can suppress the creation of the mono sub-paths by unchecking the "Auto-create sub paths" checkbox in the "New Path" dialog box.

Re: Noob question - Why mono bus as Output of a multichannel bus
Pro Tools can only output a multichannel source to a path of an identical channel width or sum all of the channels to mono. I doesn't have a built in submixer for the individual legs of a multichannel source. This is where Cargo Cult's Spanner plugin really shines.

Re: Noob question - Why mono bus as Output of a multichannel bus
Thanks for the answers!
i know i can suppress the mono busses in the I/O Setup. But sometimes they would be handy to have. I would just like to see the same "sorting" like routing from a Stereo or Mono Track or the Plug-In Organizer Menu (Flat list, Sorted by Manufacturer+Category, etc...). I thought maybe i just didnt found that menu yet

Honestly, I use the type/search function more than trying to navigate the drop-down menus these days.

Thanks Jeff. I do the same. Not sure why I didn't mention this.
