Default Mixing tips?

I am attempting to mix an entire record
solely in Pro Tools. I am aware of all the fidelity issues that I face, but the band's budget ties my hands from spending a couple of weeks behind an SSL. The music falls somewhere in the British "Radiohead" type of sound.
I have a G4 450 mhz w/ PT 5.0 24 mix
1 mix card and all the plugs you could want.
Anyone else out there getting good
results? If so, please share......

I recently recorded and mixed an album of a band that does somewhat comparable stuff to Radiohead (sometimes; check out the samples on www.tftt.de).
I have a Mix-core and 3 vintage farms as well as some outboard fx (PCM90, PCM80, NuVerb) and was maxing out DSP on almost every song without submixing or going the audiosuite way...

Run as many reverbs & ext FX that you are used to, via AES /SPDIF or even analog i/o. Dont expect world class reverbs from plug ins (althogh a new breed is just emerging that may be more than bearable ...) as they will EAT all your DSP. Running stuff live is THE way to go.

For example

I run

1 x dual reverb engine FX via AES
1 x multi FX / Harmonizer FX via AES
1 x Analog 'classic' reverb via analog i/o

the comps and other **** yo need dont use up much after the outboard take the strain of your set up...

I mix all in PT now.

You probably don't have enough DSP. In regard to the fidelity issues that you face. If you use Pro Tools right you shouldn't have any fidelity issues.

If you can wait till ProTools 5.1 shows up you'll have access to RTAS Plugins that will run off your G4. You could load up 24 or more 4 band Ren EQs!
