Default Mixing Tips!!!

Sorry if this is the wrong section. I know not which one it should go in.

i have a few songs and they are finished, but the effect I am trying to get isn't coming along for me. You know when you listen to songs and their voice seems just perfect, and it also seems as if there's another track in the background slightly delayed but low-like? Don't know if it's reverb, delayed, both, doubled, etc...

Basically, you can barely hear it but it's there. Also, it's like a slight echo like he's in an empty room.

I am trying to achieve that effect. For a reference please see these songs.

Default Re: Mixing Tips!!!

I'd approach this style using a plate reverb. More specifically, I'd probably start with an IR verb(Reverberate, TL Space, IR-1 etc) using an IR of the EMT 140. I hear no double track or layers in your reference mixes. A small handful of spots have some delay, but it's very subtle and not on the entire vox track. The delay would definitely be automated only on certain words and phrases. If you can plow through some of the chatter, there are some great guys on the Hip Hop engineering forum who can definitely give you some great tips and advice. Tony Belmont(one of the mods over there) definitely knows this style well and has great engineering chops.

Hope that helps.

Shane
