To expand on what Rich said,

Normalize is destructive on the clip. Like most audiosuite plug-ins, it will re-render the audio.

Defaulter is an audiosuite plug-in that takes control of Pro Tools and adjusts the clip gain of the clip up or down to the desired level using the clip gain feature in PT. This is non-destructive and allows you to manually adjust the clip gain for any specific clip if you didn’t like the result and keep the original audio intact for editing purposes.
