Default I'm seriously annoyed now.

I do everything Avid asks me to when installing Pro Tools, Follow the steps to the letter, follow the optimizing for windows 7 sheets, and read help on the forum. But Pro Tools just won't work right!!

I have friends how I know have got ancient, cheaper, 1/3 less powerful machines than mine and run Pro Tools perfectly, they dont run secondary recordng drives etc etc. But Im sick of Pro Tools crashing alll the time, in the last 4 days I have had to do 3 complete restores. The other day I managed to get an hour of recording out of the thing but low and behold just as Id captured the perfect take, I press stop and Pro Tools crashes again deleting the take with no chance to save. I have just done a clean restore and am messing around with Pro tools, no internet, no plugs installed, just the recomended optimizations I have done. Recording 1 track just to mess around, and it crashes while recording, then crashes again when its finished. If i even get to a point where I want to try installing some plugins I just get into a world of new issues. I have spent the time to sort it out, It annoys me that I can have it running perfectly, and the time between closing it down and restarting in the morning can make everything not work. I hate the fact that using a new mbox pro I get slight clicks and pops.

I love Pro Tools, I have taken to the interface and workflow so well, and I want to continue to use it. Am I asking alot to have a working system? to turn on my computer and it start up perfectly all the time? Im not doing massive projects, its just to help me lay down a few demos and do some university work. But its getting to the point where the pissing around to work ratio is too high.

Ill be honest I don't know anything about computers other than simple work arounds, Im new to Pro Tools, although not new to recording. And I just need a little help/hope to make my life a little easier.

RAID arrays are not supported with Pro Tools.
Are you getting any error messages with your crashes?

Nope, Just a not responding window, or in the worst cases a full lock up. Although sometimes I get error messages when loading Native instruments (up to date) which leads to a crash, or just unable to load it.

Im currently trying a clean install of everything, testing every possibility I can think of over and over again before I move onto the next stage.

Do you think the hard drive is where my problems lie?

Most people trying to run Pro Tools on DELL computers are just as seriously annoyed as you are, but if you'll start by disabling RAID then make sure you have a qualified recording drive, you might be on the road to success.

Actually, you MIGHT be able to leave the RAID intact on your SYSTEM drive, but one way or another you need a qualified secondary drive to RECORD your sessions to....the e-sata is by far your best option there.
That being said, you disable RAID in BIOS (when you first boot the computer). BUT if your initial install was on the RAID array it's best to leave it alone. Anyone else care to chime in here? MAYBE RAID on the system drive is okay, but definitely NOT on the recording drive.

To my knowledge Vista 64 bit has never been supported.

are you recording to a USB drive? USB drives are not supported for PT 8 only PT9 on Windows 7

Ive just had a little read, and the amunt I could understand it could be a little problematic if done in the wrong hands.

I think I have room for another 1-2 hard drives in my PC but to be honest Id rather go external for now.

Ive looked at some lacie drives could you recommend any others?

Would this help with the little click problem I have?

I just recived a cpu overload error upon install of BFD2, just pressed ok and all was good. But I feel my comp should be a little stronger than what it seems. I read about turning off a processor in the playback engine, which helped quite alot. But it shows up as having 8 processors. Correct my if I'm wrong, but my i7 is a quad core with 2 threads on each, so what would be the best amount of processors to run on? also are there any other good optimizations I can make, other than the suggested ones?

Thanks so far for your help, its making me feel a lot better and giving me a better understanding.
