I've never posted this question before. Only other posts I've put out,
were 'wanted posts' looking for an mBox to buy

Post #965646:

"Pro Toolers,

I have a G4/800 and would like to buy mBox. It's for
simple voiceover spots, promos etc and specialty music
shows in a home project studio.....Do I buy
the original mBox or the new mBox2 given my computer specs?

Also, is here any truth to what I've heard that the original
mBox has better pre amps, namely Focusrite pre amps?

Would appreciate any professional advice.
Any got mBox for sale?

Anyway, regardless of what was said in the past, I hope you're satisfied with the responses you've gotten. I have to disagree with the poster who said that the pres in Mbox 1 sound harsh; certainly, they don't sound as big and refined as $500+ preamps, but they also can't be confused with lower end stuff like Mackie and Behringer. They're good mid-level pres, more than sufficient (with the right mic) for VO and broadcast work.

And while were on the subject of mics, I'm biased, having worked with these in radio for years: forget the RE-20 and RE-27: they're air studio junk that won't make you sound like a VO Pro. The lowest I'd go is the Shure SM7; you might want to look also at just about anything in audio-technica's 30 and 40 series mics. I started with their AT-4033 mic and have auditioned other companies' mics in the same price range and haven't found anything I like as well. Any of the ones I mentioned will give you a good quality sound and keep you below the $500US mark.

I remember when the mBox2 was released, someone somewhere posted: "thanks digidesign for making the mBox1 an instant classic". mBox1s are stupidly cheap at the moment. If mine broke down, I'd buy another in a flash.
