Why -0.2 dB mastered DVD/VHS turns off my amp?
Trying to set the highest level dB for 2.4 hours of music on a scuba documentary and so mastered each music segment just below the level where the 192's I/O LED"s would go into the red (w/ Maxim set at -0.2 dB on the master)... so why when I burn to DVD or VHS tape is the volume level so hot that playing back thru a mid-expensive denon home theatre amp w/ the volume even up to a lower mid-range level causes the amp's protection circuits to turn the amp off after just 10 or 20 seconds....all the time....??

That's pretty loud!! The idea of DVD is the dynamic range and headroom - your average level should be around -20dB...
I know if I was sitting down to watch it, I'd be turning it off probably before my amp's overload protection kicked in.... |

Re: Why -0.2 dB mastered DVD/VHS turns off my amp
Even though there's no standard, I've heard that many mixers are using -6dBFS as the ceiling for peaks (this applies to audio mixes for Video DVD's). This seems like a pretty good level. Let's get a standard going!
As for the 0VU ref level, -20dBFS is standard. |

Re: Why -0.2 dB mastered DVD/VHS turns off my amp
citysoundman is correct, many theatrical DVDs I have remastered had a +14 dB over 0 peak limit.
Using a -20dBFS = 0VU reference, this should be your standard. If it blows your amp, dont you think it would do the same to consumers??? Why do people insist on riding the edge???? Since when did a VHS have 20 dBs od headroom available. You should make 2 masters, one for the DVD at -6 and another for the VHS at -14 peaks
